I go to Costco just to taste that chicken. I'm one of those guys in line waiting for them to give that little piece of chicken.

Re: Ugly tomatoes

What the.. I have my own Starlite Diner back home in South Florida, and I couldn't help resisting the thought of the same sandwich. To my dismay, it was liiiiiight on the corned beef, heavy on the mayo in a tiny cup beside it, no cheese, two slices of thick, untoasted (rather stale) white bread, and classic piece of pickle beside it. I would have traded the pathetic sandwich i had that day in a heartbeat for the heart clogging grease trap you picture here.

I ended up only eating the corned beef and the pickle, for the record :P

On the bright side, I found a deli who knows how to serve a reuben (and empty a wallet), but it's the best one in town. If you ever go to UF/Gainesville, try McAllister's Deli.

Re: Late Spring Seasonal Reminder

haha just found this blog and had to write something. We just launch Great Taste Magazine and see that you also have great taste...

Re: The Costco chicken

Another of my favorites using the costco chicken is buffalo chicken pizza. Simialar to your BBQ one, I use the pocketless pita, tomato sauce, Costco chicken, franks hots sauce, feta. In the oven for 10 min or so. Yum!

Re: Seven Layer Mexican Dip

That one was shot with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel with the stock 18-55mm lens and (if I recall) no tripod. According to the EXIF data, it was shot with 1/10 sec. shutter, F/3.5, no flash, and at a focal length of 22 mm (ISO 100).

In general, I've found that I get good results switching to Program AE mode ("P" mode for Canon products) under natural light with a tripod and no flash. Zooming in a little bit helps to blur the background.

Food is notoriously hard to shoot. :)

Re: Seven Layer Mexican Dip

What are you using to photo your food? I partake about once a week for lunch.

Re: Hoagie Hunt

I am a big fan of the Sandwich Man in the Harrisburg/Carlisle corridor. There are/were 3 of them at one time, 2 in Harrisburg and one in Carlisle. The one in Carlisle has changed it's name to "American Hero".

I would eat there for every meal if it didn't mean I would be dead by next Thursday. Good stuff. You should come up this way for a run/workout some weekend day and we can hit that place for lunch.

Re: Season Reminder

The best way to find out is to know your local area, so find a few food stands that you trust and get to know the grower. Farmers are a pretty tight community, and if they don't have it, they'll let you know who else is growing it. Joining a CSA is also a good idea too, we have quite a few in Lancaster. The Simply in Season cookbook is also good. The best thing to do is just pay attention at market from week to week, because the variation in weather means some things may come in early or late. I'll try to keep this blog current with what's good and in season.

Re: Season Reminder

Is there a good source for finding out what is in season? Growing up in the supermarket generation, I really am not tuned it with the food calendar.

Re: Simple bread

I'm impressed Nate, on your way to being a metrosexual.

Re: Simple bread

That looks tasty. My wife follows a couple of cooking blogs, but they all say things like "bon appetit" and "delectable". I love cooking, so now I have a guys cooking blog to follow. Hopefully you'll use more manly words like "chow down" or "dig in".
